Improvement in Confidence Will Not Be Smooth

Consumer sentiment remains mired at low levels but does appear to be slowly improving. The upward path is far from smooth, as evidenced by the decline in confidence in October, according to preliminary data from the University of Michigan. The index is still more than 14 points above its cyclical low set in November....
