A Less-Bad Holiday Season

Consumer spending is trending flat to slightly higher. The trend in consumption has recently been obscured by volatility in auto sales generated by the cash for clunkers incentive. Consumers have little cash to spend with wage income well below its year-ago level, asset income down even more, and few prospects for significant capital gains realizations or borrowing. In this environment, retail sales are running below last year's levels. If not for a significant easing in comparisons in the next few months, holiday sales would look terrible again....
