Energy Took a Greater Share in 2008

Energy's burden on the consumer continued to rise in 2008, according to the latest from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Expenditure Survey (for an overview of the survey results, see 2008 Consumer Expenditure Survey Highlights). Although energy prices have moderated this year, such was not the case in 2008, as energy price gains led energy to account for 9.5% of average spending by consumers. In this case, we define energy spending as the expenses on gasoline and motor oil, fuel oil and other fuels, electricity, and natural gas....
