Release Information

Foreign trade statistics involve the movement of goods between Estonia and other countries. In order to indicate commodity flows the concepts of exports and imports are used.

Statistics Estonia includes only the movement of physical goods in compiling the foreign trade statistical data. Data on trade in goods are presented at current prices.

As of 2004 foreign trade statistics are based on the two data collection systems Extrastat and Intrastat.

Extrastat (Extra EC Trade Statistics) — the system for collecting statistics in relation to the trading of goods between the EU Member States and third countries (non-Member States). Trade flows are referred to as exports and imports. Estonian Tax and Customs Board collects foreign trade data from customs declarations.

Intrastat (Intra EC Trade Statistics) — the system for collecting statistics in relation to the trading of goods between the Member States of the European Union. Trade flows are referred to as dispatches and arrivals. Statistics Estonia collects data from the enterprises involved in foreign trade.

The first estimates about foreign trade include the foreign trade data of the reference month collected by the Extrastat system as well as the data already collected by the Intrastat system by that time. As the Intrastat data are still being gathered from enterprises and not yet adjusted by the publication time, thus the turnover of the missing data in the reference month are collected from the VAT declarations (form KMD) of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. If necessary, additional coefficient is added to the first estimate.

Definitions:

Exports - exportation of goods produced in Estonia, exportation of goods imported from a foreign country (re-exports), temporary exportation of goods for the purpose of processing abroad, re-exportation after inward processing and supplies for foreign vessels and aircraft stores. Exports exclude transit and services.

Imports - imports of goods into Estonia for domestic consumption and for resale to a foreign country, imports for inward processing with notification of intended return and re-imports after processing outside of Estonia. Imports exclude transit and services.

The goal of publishing the first estimates to the users of foreign trade statistics is to make the data available as soon as possible. However, it should be taken into account that the first estimates may be inaccurate and later revisions may be significant.

The first estimates about the monthly foreign trade data are published in this table. The first estimates are published after 40 days have passed from the end of the reference month and these estimates are adjusted after 56 days have passed from the end of the monthly period. The data of earlier months are adjusted once in a month (after 56 days have passed from the end of the reference month).
