Release Information

The France National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) reports monthly population data for France Métropolitaine. The data set also includes the total number of deaths and births. Moody's Analytics provides a seasonally adjusted population series.

This annual survey is drawn from an estimated population on 1 January taking into account the final results of Census. For subsequent years, this estimate is updated based on vital statistics and an estimate of net migration.

The total number of births in a French territory is calculated by the number of declarations to the registrar. The declaration must be made, by law, within three days of birth. Since March 1993, the registrar considers a birth if the child breathed.

Geographical scope - Data is available on two fields: France metropolitan and France (metropolitan departments and overseas). The islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy, formerly in Guadeloupe, changed status since July 15, 2007 and became communities overseas. At that time they had left France immediately. To avoid creating broken field in the series, they have actually been excluded from France for all years running.

Data is provisional until year end.
