Release Information

The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) reports monthly data on the vital statistics for Hungary. Vital Statistics represent the number of births, deaths and marriages that occurred in the country. Vital Statistics also document geographical location and demographic characteristics of the population. Vital statistics are used to monitor and evaluate public policies and predict demand for certain goods and services.

Population numbers are based on data of the population censuses.

Marriage: contracted before the registrar acting officially in the presence of two witnesses.
Live birth: (according to the recommendation of the UN) a fetus is live-born if it gives any sign of life after birth, regardless of the length of pregnancy and the length of life after birth.
Death: final passing away of all signs of life at any time after live birth at any time, i.e. cessation of all life-functions without the capability of revival.

When calculating the yearly population of the inter-census period the starting-point is the final population number of the last population census for the continuous registration of which the data of natural increase and decrease, respectively, available from vital statistics were used till 2000.   From 1 January 2001 the method of the continuous registration changed to account for international migration.

The population census is carried out by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office every 10 years.

Data is subject to revisions.
