For Japan, the indexes of industrial production capture the production, shipment and the inventory situation of the mining and manufacturing industries. The indexes enable users to perceive production activities of business establishments in mining and manufacturing, supply and demand trends of produced products, and production plans for manufacturers, two months ahead as well as production-related facilities and their operational statuses.
These indexes are highly detailed and are classified by business types and goods and hence can also be used to grasp production trends. Data are published every month. The data are based mainly on the "Current Survey of Production" conducted by METI.
The indexes of production forecast surveys planned production amounts for current and proceeding months, for a subset of manufacturing industries, to assess changing business conditions. Monthly from 2008.

The Survey of Production Forecast in manufacturing is to forecast production activities in the coming two months as of the 10th of the month. It coincides with the monthly release of industrial production. Data are available for the Manufacturing sector including breakdown according to the JSIC classification. Responses are collected in terms of the previous month, current month, and next month. Data are presented as indices and percent changes from the previous month in both seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted form. A realization ratio is also available which shows to what extent the estimated amount for the current month in the previous survey has been actualized.
In this survey, the following production data are collected from major enterprises: the actual production amount for the previous month, the estimated amount for the current month, and the planned amount for the following month. Based on the data collected, the Production Forecast Indices are calculated on 195 manufacturing goods. The Realization Ratio is also calculated by using these indices.
For the production index in mining and manufacturing, and the operating ratio for manufacturing, we back-extend to 1978m1 using the predecessors.
Yes. Data are preliminary when released and are subject to revisions.
The corpus of industrial branches is not guaranteed to be identical between index base years.
