Statistics New Zealand (Stats NZ) use administrative data (goods and services tax (GST) data, sourced from Inland Revenue) wherever possible, and supplement this by surveying only the largest and most complex businesses. With this design they have reduced the number of businesses being surveyed by 87 percent and eliminated most of the small- and medium-sized businesses from the survey entirely.

The target population is all kind-of-activity units (KAUs) operating in New Zealand classified on Stats NZ’s Business Register (BR) to Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 2006 (ANZSIC06) Division G – Retail Trade, and ANZSIC06 Division H – Accommodation and Food Services. Stats NZ collect GEO or store-based sales information from the largest businesses. This ensures that they provide regional and other geographic-based retail statistics.

All seasonally adjusted figures are subject to revision each month. This enables the seasonal component to be better estimated and removed from the series.

Non-retail activity

"Non-retail activity" is defined by the source as "sales made by non-retail locations owned by retail businesses" and is reported for the country as a whole; it is not localized to the two islands (INZL_^^^I) or 16 regions (INZL_^^^^). It is necessary for additivity over geos to the country, for example:

WRLTTUQ.INZL = WRLTTUQ.INZL_NORI + WRLTTUQ.INZL_SOUI + WRLTNTUQ.INZL

It does not apply to additivity over industries:

WRLTTUQ.INZL = WRLPTPUQ.INZL + WRLMVHUQ.INZL + WRLXMVUQ.INZL
WRLTTUQ.INZL <> WRLPTPUQ.INZL + WRLMVHUQ.INZL + WRLXMVUQ.INZL + WRLTNTUQ.INZL
