The source writes:

Foreign trade statistics generally covers the movement of goods between Slovak Republic and the rest of the world.

Total imports include goods entering Slovak Republic intended for a domestic consumption, and also for processing and subsequently re-exported.

In the total exports, there are included goods permanently leaving territory of the Slovak Republic or goods leaving the territory for processing and subsequently re-imported. Since May 1, 2004 Slovak foreign trade statistics have been composed of data from EXTRASTAT system and INTRASTAT system.

EXTRASTAT system furnish information on exchange of commodities with non-member countries of the European Union based on documents prescribed for customs procedure, INTRASTAT system contain information on commodity transactions with EU Member States as partner countries obtained from statistical survey. The results of these two statistics are however presented to users of the data as a whole in the description of foreign trade.

The customs documents, as a data source, have been processed according to different regulations of the Ministry of Finance (MF SR). As a result, the series for 1993 through 1997 are not fully comparable with later data. International or regional guidelines: Foreign trade statistics is compatible with procedure and legislation of European Community in this area and with international recommendations in the UN International Trade Statistics Concepts and definitions. Classification/sectorization goods are classified according to the 8-digit EU Combined nomenclature (CN), which is based on the Harmonized System (HS).

Data are also published according to the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC Rev. 4), by Broad Economic Categories (BEC Rev. 4), and by Classes of classification of products by activity (CPA). Countries are coded according to 2-digit ISO 3166 alphabetic codes and in accordance with EU Geonomenclature countries and territories. Transaction coverage included are all movable property, including electricity, gas, water and processing trade (since January 1998).The main exclusions are transit operations, goods temporarily admitted or dispatched, operational leases, goods for repair and goods after repair with substituted parts.

Indirect imports and indirect exports, i.e. only customs formalities take place, are excluded from statistics on national level in Slovakia (according to this methodology data will be recalculated since the year 2006). Geographic covers full customs territory of the Slovak Republic.

No transactions with specific countries are excluded from the statistics. Since the Slovak Republic entered into Eurozone on January 1, 2009, the data are published in EUR. In INTRASTAT system the exchange rate that was used for tax purposes (VAT) or the rate according to customs regulations valid in the day of physical movement of goods is used for conversion of foreign currency to EUR. Within the trade with non-EU countries customs administration uses the exchange rate for the second-last Wednesday of a month published by European Central Bank on that or following day for conversion to EUR. The data up to 2008 published in EUR are based on the conversion rate of EUR 1 = SKK 30,126.

Both total imports and total exports are published as a FOB-type value. Total imports are calculated also as CIF-type value. Value of non-invoiced merchandise is value which would have been invoiced in the event of any sale or purchase.
