Release Information

Statistics South Africa (Statistics SA) publishes monthly indices of manufacturing production volume and total value of sales and manufactured products separated by manufacturing divisions.

Publication P3041.2 - Manufacturing: Production and sales

The current base year is 2015.

The industries are classified based on the 1993 edition of the Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities (SIC), Fifth Edition, Report No. 09-90-02 and includes manfucaturing enterprises that conduct activities in the following:

  • the manufacturing, processing, making or packing of products
  • the slaughtering of animals, including poultry
  • installation, assembly, completion, repair and related work
Questionnaires are sent monthly to a sample of 3,005 manufacturing enterprises from a population of 45,966. The surveys are set to be returned to Statistics South Africa within 10 days after the end of the designated reference month.

The production index is defined as a statistical measure of the change in the volume of production.

Data is subject to monthly revisions.

Each year a new sample is drawn, and the full history is revised.

The indexes are rebased every five years.
